Festivity of Sant Antoni (January 17th)
The Sant Antoni festival is one of the most anticipated celebrations in Mallorca, including Puerto Pollensa. During this event, animals are blessed in honor of the patron saint of animals, and there are bonfires, traditional dances, and parades. It is a festival full of symbolism and folklore that attracts both locals and tourists.
Bonfire competition
On the eve of January 17th, as in many other Mallorcan towns, bonfire competitions are held. Piles of wood are assembled, often with symbolic or allegorical figures, and lit at night. Squares and streets glow with firelight, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.
El Pi de Sant Antoni: a unique tradition
The most distinctive moment of Sant Antoni in Pollença takes place on January 17th, when locals and visitors head to the Ternelles estate to collect a previously selected pine tree. Once brought into the village and placed in Plaça Vella, the trunk is thickened and soaped to make it slippery.
Young locals then compete to be the first to climb to the top of the pine, a tradition that symbolises effort, local pride and strong community spirit.
Beneïdes and animal blessing
As throughout the island, the beneïdes (animal blessings) are held on Sant Antoni’s day. After the mass, pets and farm animals receive the blessing of the patron saint, a moving ceremony that reflects the rural roots of the celebration.
La Patrona of Pollensa (August 2nd)
The celebration of La Patrona honors the Virgin of the Angels and reenacts the historic battle between Moors and Christians. The event features parades, concerts, and fireworks, culminating in a theatrical representation of the battle, which is a must-see spectacle.
